7 Tips for First Time Jet Ski Riders

Dec 8, 2022

If you truly want to enjoy a fun filled day on the waters, you’ve got to ensure your safety. Lots of newbie jet ski riders either stress out too much or remain ignorant about water safety tips.

Our very first advice to you will be to make sure you’ve completed your jet ski boating safety course. You can do that easily with us at Boater’s Academy. We provide online classes to help you get your boating license. All our courses are US Coast Guard and NASBLA approved.

Now onto the fun part; here are some tips to keep in mind while you enjoy the waters!

1. Prepare to get drenched

Even if you don’t fall into the water and driving very slowly, you’re going to get some splashes onto you. And that truly is part of the fun of riding a jet ski.

2. Always wear the vest

Don’t bother wearing expensive clothes. Your bathing suit should be enough. It doesn’t matter what the weather or water situation is like; always wear the life jacket vest.

3. Jet Skis can be dangerous

With any adventurous activity, there is always a risk of getting injured. Just make sure you follow the safety tips outlined to you during class and listen to your guide if you have one.

4. Drive straight

People who are new to riding jet skis will face some difficulty keeping the vessel straight. Instead of putting pressure on the handlebars, keep your posture straight. Let your body do the steering.

5. Steering is always fast

When it comes to jet skis, you can’t really slow down and then turn. You will most likely need to step on the throttle before making a turn so make sure you hold on to your seat tight!

6. Learn how to re-board

No matter how hard you try, you can’t avoid a slip into the water. That’s part of what makes skiing so much fun. But don’t let go of your jet ski when you do! Keep a grip on the handle and use it to prop yourself back up. Don’t try to re-board from the side, the ski will topple over.

7. Loosen up!

Many beginners complain that all that handle gripping makes their arms hurt and their shoulders sore. That usually happens when you’re tense. Relax. You don’t need to hang on for dear life. Make sure your elbows are slightly bent so you’re more flexible with the hold.

You’ll get more tips likes these during the Boater’s Academy safety lessons. Make sure to take up our classes prior to heading out to the waters!
